Artist in Residence (AIR) Program Fall 2009 - Spring 2010
Artist Biographies
The artists working in the schools and giving presentations for the elementary students in Jamestown this school year include:
Laura Wennstrom – visual arts – grade 3 & 4
Laura Wennstrom joins the Arts Center as resident artist for September through December. During her time she will be teaching art in Jamestown schools, & Arts After School, Adult Classes and workshops at the Arts Center.
Laura Wennstrom graduated from North Park University in Chicago with a degree in Studio Art. Laura has been making art since she was little, these days she specializes in mixed media collage and installation art. Laura has spent the past two years working with children in inner-city Chicago making art and jewelry. When she’s not making art or teaching, she enjoys music, walks, coffee and thrift store shopping.
Mary Zimmerman – visual arts – grade 5
Mary has participated in over 400 weeks of residencies in the Dakotas and Canada in over 80 school systems, community libraries, and special needs institutions. Mary's general goal for students in a residency is to bring into existence a broadened and more intense awareness of themselves and the world around them (through each individual's exploration of their own creativity, manipulation of materials, and using the visual vocabulary). Mediums investigated may include printmaking, drawing, painting, paper making and marbling or the creation of a mural.
Theatreworks – “Click, Clack, Moo” plays for grades K - 3
Tim and Robin Balster present shows that are non-stop quality entertainment. Laughter is contagious when audience member s find themselves in hilarious situations as they are called onstage to help create the magic. Performances can be tailored to suit any age group or occasion. Music, audience participation, live animals and special effects all add up to a sensational show that will sweep any audience into a world of wonder. Some of the most recent productions have included Sheer Magic, Duck Soup Magic Show, Seasons Greetings, and their latest production, The Wizard’s Apprentice. The Blasters have been thrilling audiences with their illusions for over twenty years—at schools, colleges, fairs, festivals, trade shows, cruise ships and on television. Click, Clack, Moo - All day long Farmer Brown hears "click clack moo, clickety clackety moo..." The cows are typing and protesting their working conditions! A hilariously "moo-ving" new musical about compromise, based on the award-winning book by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin.
Step Africa – visual arts – grades K, 2, 3
Step Afrika celebrates stepping, an art form born at African American fraternities and based in African traditions. As the first professional company dedicated to stepping, Step Afrika’s intricate kicks, stomps and rhythms mixed with spoken word pound the floor and fill the air. Whether you are a college student, a dance lover, a family of four, or a world culture enthusiast, find out more about Step Afrika.

Artist Biographies
Ali LaRock – visual arts grade 4 Funded by the North Dakota Council on the Arts
Ali LaRock is visual artist living and working in Bismarck, North Dakota. Ali creates art in the areas of painting, drawing, and mixed me dia. Ali grew up in New Town, North Dakota. She received her B.F.A. in painting from Minnesota State University, Moorhead in 1998. Besides creating art Ali enjoys teaching art to children through various artist in residency opportunities through organizations such as the North Dakota Council on the Arts, Theo Art School, Plains Art Museum, Sleepy Hollow Summer Theatre and Art Camp, and the International Music Camp. During the school year, Ali travels to different schools throughout North Dakota as a visiting artist. When she is not traveling Ali works on her own art, gives private lessons and art birthday parties, and also offers after school classes through Theo Art School in Bismarck. Her summers are also spent traveling and teaching at art camps and art programs through various organizations.
Barry Kleider – photography and visual arts – grade 1 Funded by the North Dakota Council on the Arts
Barry Kleider is a professional photographer specializing in landscape photography and fine art portraiture. His work has been commissioned by Oakla nd Museum of California, and is included in several collections including the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Barry is a rostered teaching artist with the North Dakota Council on the Arts, and the Minnesota State Arts Board. He has logged hundreds of classroom hours using photography to teach such diverse subjects as English composition & poetry, social studies, chemistry, physics, history, math and health. He also has extensive experience working with non-traditional students including blind and visually-impaired, cognitively-delayed and autistic learners.
As a visiting artist, Barry worked with Jamestown’s first grade students teaching them about the work of 20th century artists including painters Joan Miro, and Henri Matisse, photographer Man Ray, and sculptor Alexander Calder. His residency was funded by the North Dakota Council on the Arts and the Jamestown Art Center.

Willson & McKee – Celtic Music performances for all grades Funded by the North Dakota Council on the Arts
With 6 children and 4 grandchildren Ken Willson and Kim McKee know kids!! A new 5-day residency from the pair co mbines their 17 years touring experience and their in-depth knowledge of kids into a marvelous mix of cultural information and education. The recipe starts with their own Celtic culture and includes Song, dance, storytelling, creative art and writing, hands on instruments, a great kilt demo (not to be missed!) Scottish bagpipes, cultural slide presentation and of course the famous “let’s talk like shrek” Broad Scotts language segment. Throw this all into the mix and by the end of the week you have educated, engaged and entertained kids participating in a Ceili (kay-lee: a Celtic celebration of music and dance) that your school will remember. The 2006-07 school year brought these energetic and fun performers to over 10,000 students, and the prestige of being the ‘most requested’ artists in several states. UND Steel Drum Band – perf ormances for all grades
Formed in the spring of 1999, the UND Steel Drum Band has become a very popular musical attraction in the region. Performing on authentic oil drums, the band will excite you with up-beat calypso, soca and island favorites, creating a tropical atmosphere of pure enjoyment.
Hampstead Stage – “A Christmas Carol” play for all grades
The Hampstead family was formed over twenty-four years ago. It is named after the area of London from which the founders hail. Since its inception, the company has grown into one of the largest national educational touring companies. In 2004 the Hampstead Stage Company was formed, a not for profit organization, in order to continue to bring high quality theatre to as many venues as possible. Their shows are performed by two actors, each playing several roles, and they always include some children from the audience. Hampstead Stage Company scripts are original adaptations, based directly on literary classics. The plays last one hour, with a question and answer session after each performance.
