Some details:
The Arts Center in Jamestown, North Dakota organized the 2008 Culture Festival – a statewide celebration of folk and ethnic traditions found throughout North Dakota. Supported in part with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and community supporters, the festival will share traditions of the native population, ancestral immigrants and recent refugees that are currently living in North Dakota. It was held in McElroy Park on Friday, August 1st (7:30 p.m.–10:00 p.m.), Saturday, August 2nd (11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.), and Sunday, August 3rd (10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.). North Dakota is home to an array of folk artists who range from native populations to the most recent refugees that represent a myriad of ethnic/heritage groups. The 2008 festival theme was “Traditional Games and Traditional Foods”. The purpose of the Festival is preserve and celebrate the state’s cultural traditions by providing an opportunity for the public to experience quality traditional arts, music and food. For artists, the festival offers the opportunity to connect with other artists, sponsors, and the general public.
The Festival began with traditional Irish music by Mick Moloney and the Green Fields of America. Moloney is a National Heritage Fellowship recipient, the federal government’s highest form of recognition of folk and traditional arts. Bringing this group to the festival was funded in part by The National Endowment for the Arts, The National Council for Traditional Arts (NCTA), and The North Dakota Council on the Arts.
On Saturday, traditional artists displayed and demonstrated art related to the festival’s theme of food and games. Many exciting games were played throughout the park like Bunnock (German), Croquet (English), Double Ball (Native American), Scottish Highland Games (Scottish), Horseshoes (Mixed Cultures) and many more.
The Culture Festival concluded on Sunday with a Polka Mass in McElroy Park.
The 2008 Culture Festival included the Lincoln Chautauqua. Chautauqua includes nationally recognized scholars who address the audience in the long tradition of first-person dramatic presentations that originated with the North Dakota Humanities Council in the 1970’s as part of the Great Plains Chautauqua Society. The presentations were moderated by Dr. D. Jerome Tweton, who portrayed the character of William Jayne, the first territorial governor of Dakota Territory and the personal friend of President Lincoln, Dr. Frein as Abraham Lincoln; Charles Everett Pace as Frederick Douglass; Dr. Carrol Peterson as Walt Whitman.
